More and more cities and local governments across the globe are taking action, making a powerful contribution to meeting the targets of the Paris Climate Agreement
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was formed in June 2016 when the world’s two largest initiatives focused on municipal-led climate action — the Compact of Mayors and the EU Covenant of Mayors — merged to form one united initiative working towards a resilient and low-emission society. Since then, “regional covenants” have taken shape in different parts of the world to provide context-specific support to local governments that wish to join this rapidly expanding global network of 10,000+ cities that are committed to voluntary climate action. The Global Covenant of Mayors in Canada is a collaboration between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, ICLEI Canada, the Global Covenant of Mayors Secretariat, and the International Urban Cooperation Project supported by funding from the European Union. The initiative combines two leading domestic climate programs, the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program and Building Adaptive and Resilient Communities (BARC), with the leading global climate program. Together we can further advance Canadian local climate action by adding value, opportunities, and streamlined support for members.
